Our remote learning activities for the next two weeks will provide opportunities for enrichment (digging deeper into class concepts we've already learned) and review.
Intro Letter:
March 20, 2020
Hello students (and parents),
I hope that you are doing okay, despite the circumstances. I know every email you receive from teachers this week will highlight how strange things are right now. Obviously, none of us has ever experienced our society shutting down for an indefinite period of time. The change to our daily lives, coupled with the disheartening news about the spread of the virus, has made for a difficult week. That said, I do believe that some of the difficult aspects of this time can be mitigated by continuing to learn, by developing routines, and by looking for hope.
In turn, I have three primary goals for our learning activities before our spring break:
As per our district’s policy, all learning until at least April 3rd is optional. However, I implore upon you to choose to participate in the opportunity to learn. I won’t just throw busy work at you. If I’m asking you to do something, I promise I see value in your completing the activity. Although we will not be learning any new concepts during this time, we will be linking previously learned content to the present day. I believe this will reinforce the material we’ve already learned. Also, as we regularly link government concepts in this class to current events, our learning will link to the Coronavirus. If thinking about the pandemic is too overwhelming for you right now, please email me. I will happily develop alternative learning opportunities for you.
I also hope that we can make things at least somewhat personable. It will be strange not to say hello to each of you as you enter the classroom, and strange not to have the opportunity to chat about nonacademic things. Drop me a note at the end of an assignment or write me an email, if you like. I would love to hear what is happening (or how you are coping with the lack of anything happening) in your life.
As always, our course materials will be on my website: misskathrinemoore.weebly.com
I will also send weekly emails with a brief description of the plan for the week.
With care,
Miss Moore

In turn, I have three primary goals for our learning activities before our spring break:
- To provide you opportunities to engage in meaningful learning. I truly believe that understanding the world helps you better understand how you want to shape it. When we devote ourselves to learning the social sciences, we are better prepared to participate in shaping our society.
- To provide your days some structure, helping to calm your mind by giving you purpose. (Skeptical? Read this article of an American family that was under quarantine in China.)
- Finally, perhaps some of what we look at will give you a little hope, despite all of the uncertainty we are currently experiencing.
